Holy Trinity monastery

Holy Trinity monastery

The Holy Trinity Monastery is located on Mali Čukar hill in the area of the village Ždrelo. It was built next to a spring of healing water. According to the legend, many blind patients regained their sight after using this water and praying to the God.

Sima Stevanović from Ždrelo got the idea to build the monastery on the foundations of the former church of the Holy Trinity in 1955. At the beginning of 1998, he obtained the necessary official consent and began construction. The monastery was completed in 2001. The church is a single-nave building with a dome in the Byzantine style.

According to the legend, the old monastery was built by King Milutin at the end of the thirteenth century or the beginning of the fourteenth century. It was initially dedicated to Saint Nicholas, then to the holy apostles Peter and Paul, and then to the Holy Trinity. Around 1718, the monastery was destroyed in retaliation by the Tatars who fought for Turkey, after they had suffered a catastrophic defeat by the Austrian army. The monastery was renovated and again ruined in 1790’s clashes between the Austrian and Turkish armies.
