There is a rich collection of cultural and historical heritage as well as ethnographic and spiritual culture materials in the Homeland museum in Petrovac na Mlavi dating back to prehistory, antique and the Middle Ages.
The museum is located in the building of the "Old Post Office" in the city center. The building belongs to the unique architectural complex "Načelstvo" (principality) and as a real estate cultural asset, it is under the protection of the Regional Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments in Smederevo.
The following collections have been formed during the contemporary work of the Homeland Museum: archeological, ethnological, historical, art (with one legacy) and numismatic. The collections are smaller, but they are being successively broadened thanks to the archeological excavations at the site of Belovode, the occasional work of the Art Colony, gifts and, more rarely, purchase.
The museum library has also been formed through an exchange with other museums and related cultural institutions, as well as gifts from individuals.

On average, a dozen exhibitions are organized annually. Cooperation has been established with other museums and related cultural institutions. The most represented are exhibitions of fine and applied arts. Also, the museum organized a mini ethno-film festival and an archeological film evening on two occasions.

The publishing activity of the Homeland Museum did not come to life in the true sense of the word, but all the exhibitions in the Museum Gallery were accompanied by a catalog publication.

At the local level, the Homeland Museum has established cooperation with all cultural and educational institutions and associations, as well as with art associations and museums in the area.

Kao jedna od mlađih kulturnih ustanova u gradu, Zavičajni muzej ima za cilj: prikupljanje, čuvanje, istraživanje i promovisanje kulturne baštine, pre svega na nivou opštine Petrovac, razvijanje likovne kulture, pružanje podrške umetničkim stvaraocima, edukovanje sugrađana kroz radionice, izložbe, publikacije i druge javne projekte Zavičajnog muzeja. Ulaz u muzej se ne naplaćuje.
